Community Water Fluoridation Status: Fully Fluoridated
Cavities are formed when bacteria in the mouth use sugars to produce an acid that breaks down teeth. Fluoride works to strengthen teeth by making them more resistant to breakdown when acid is present. Fluoride can be administered systemically, such as in community water fluoridation or with fluoride supplements, or topically, as toothpastes, gels, and rinses.
The ADA recognizes community water fluoridation as a safe and effective way to reduce cavities. Drinking or cooking with fluoridated water, as found in Westford, exposes teeth regularly to fluoride and thus prevents tooth decay. Even with community water fluoridation, though, diet and oral hygiene are important in preventing cavities.
