Community Water Fluoridation Status: Fully Fluoridated

Cavities are formed when bacteria in the mouth use sugars to produce an acid that breaks down teeth. Fluoride works to strengthen teeth by making them more resistant to breakdown when acid is present. Fluoride can be administered systemically, such as in community water fluoridation or with fluoride supplements, or topically, as toothpastes, gels, and rinses.

The ADA recognizes community water fluoridation as a safe and effective way to reduce cavities. Drinking or cooking with fluoridated water, as found in Westford, exposes teeth regularly to fluoride and thus prevents tooth decay. Even with community water fluoridation, though, diet and oral hygiene are important in preventing cavities. Limiting foods with sugars will prevent bacteria from using those sugars to produce the acid that causes cavities. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once daily will remove bacteria-filled plaque from all surfaces of the teeth and reduce the chance of cavity formation. The American Dental Association recommends children under 3 years old brush their teeth as soon as they come into the mouth with the help of an adult with no more than a smear of fluoride toothpaste. For children 3 to 6 years old, a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste should be used when brushing, according to the American Dental Association.

Establishing a dental home by age 2 and coming in for regular dental visits is critical in maintaining good oral health. During recall appointments Dr. Ganley can evaluate and monitor all teeth for cavities, remove plaque and tartar from teeth, and apply a topical fluoride that will help to strengthen teeth.
